Negative appendicular rate: A review study

Abstract

Acute appendicitis is the most popular emergency in the operating theater. The diagnosis of the majority inflamed appendix depends on clinical examinations, laboratory findings, and histopathological investigations. The preferred method of treatment is resection of vermiform appendix. This study is conducted to determine the negative appendicular rate and histopathological study of appendix after appendicectomy. A total of (10) studies have been systematically reviewed by analyzing articles using the search words "acute appendicitis" clinicopathological study. Results revealed that a total of 10 studies have been reviewed, the patients, average age was thirty-two (range, 7-69). Adult patients ( 16 years) represented (75.3%) of the research samples, the gender of women accounted for (42.5%) of all patients. About (86.8%) of resected appendixes had histological characteristics that support appendicitis. In (1.6%) 0f cases, there were aberrant pathologies other than appendix inflammation the negative appendictomy rate (Normal resected appendix on histopathological examination) was (11.6 %). A total of (59.3%) of negative appendectomies were performed on females. Adult (>16 year) represent represented negative appendectomies (76.8%). In conclusions, histopathological analysis of resected appendicular specimens should be done in order to see the incidence of NAR and avoid complications.
